Sunday Mornings at 11:30 a. m.

The Wired Word

The Wired Word, facilitated by the rector, examines a current event from the previous week and analyzes it through the use of Biblical references. Come and see how Scripture can help us make sense of what’s happening in the world today.

This class meets in the new library on the 3rd floor of the Parish Building (Room 302).

When Was Jesus “The Christ,” and When Did He Know It?
A Look at the Development of New Testament Christology—Facilitated by Bill Yanson

New Testament authors differ on their sense of the “Christological Moment”—that moment in time when Yeshua-bar-Yousef, the human son of the carpenter, became the anointed one, the Messiah—the Christ—through God’s action in history.

This course, running four Sundays from January 17 through February 7, will examine several New Testament sources—including all four versions of the Gospel and First Corinthians—to note their differing views of the “Christological Moment,” and to look for a pattern and reasons for their changing view. It is hoped that this study will inform our own sense of Jesus the Man and Jesus Christ Son of God, and, ultimately, inform our sense of our own vocation as we seek to follow our Lord and Savior.

Although materials will be provided, it would be useful for participants to bring with them a copy of either the NIV or RSV New Testament.

This class will meet in Room 301 on the third floor of the parish building.

Bible Study

We are currently studying a ten-week video series facilitated by the Rector. Filmed on location in Israel, Faith Lessons videos bring God's Word to life with astounding relevance for modern believers. Faith Lessons on The Death and Resurrectin of the Messiah focus on the the last week of Jesus' life, his death and resurrection, and the Holy Spirit's visit on Pentecost. Each week we watch a short video and then examine the biblical passages pertinent to that week's session.

Here is the line-up:

March 11 When Storms Come (Sea of Galilee): Just as Jesus stilled the storm, demonstrating His power over the natural world, so He also takes charge of our raging struggles.

March 18 Piercing the Darkness (Kursi): Kursi was believed to be the home of demons. There, in deliberate choice to aggressively confront evil, Jesus healed the demon-posessed man.

March 25 Gates of Hell (Caesarea Philippi): In the center of this pagan city, Jesus declared, "Upon this rock I will build my church," challenging believers to boldly wage war on evil.

April 1 (no class - Maundy Thursday)

April 8 City of the Great King? Part One (The Temple): When seen in the urban setting of Herod's first century Jerusalem, Jesus' actions and teachings come alive, sparking a deeper understanding of our faith's Jewish roots.

April 15 City of the Great King? Part Two (Jerusalem)

April 22 The Lamb of God (Mount of Olives): The significance of Passover celebrations and Passover Week events intertwine with Jesus' choice of time, place, and message.

April 29 The Weight of the World (Capernaum/Gethsemane): Manufacturing olive oil involves intense pressure. This process exposes a fresh perspective from which we can fully appreciate Jesus' sacrifice, which is our anointing.

May 6 Roll Away the Stone (Garden Tomb): Understanding the significance of Jesus' burial in a Jewish-style tomb and His resurrection during the Feast of First Fruits reveals the magnitude of His love and the new life He brings.

May 13 Power to the People (Southern Stairs): The day of Pentecost marks the day when God's presence left the temple structure to dwell in his followers, empowering us today, as then, to change the world.

May 20 Total Commitment (Caesarea): David built fame out of simplicity; Herod's palace fortresses were elaborate. But as with David, who lived for God, what matters most is not what we build, but for whom we build.
